Vegetable garden

A small vegetable garden of about 25 m², kept from 2010 to 2015: many varieties side by side, and three three-metre sunflowers snapped by a storm.

A vegetable garden kept from 2010 to 2015, stopped at the end of middle school. That is exactly the GameMaker interval, and the coincidence is worth stating: the two threads, making software and growing things, start the same year and last five years each. So it is not a current practice, but it is the only one of these projects whose tempo could never be set. A failed season cannot be relaunched the next morning, and no amount of extra work makes anything grow faster.

A small plot of about 25 m², but a dense one: it grew tomatoes, potatoes, radishes, green beans, strawberries, lettuce, cucumbers, courgettes, herbs. Few things really failed, which is not to the gardener’s credit: at that scale and in that climate, most of these plants forgive a lot.

The only real defeat fits in one night. Three sunflowers grown to three metres, the pride of the season, snapped clean by a big storm. Nothing had been done wrong; they were simply too tall for what was coming, with no way of knowing in advance.

What remains of it is not a gardening lesson. There was a mini greenhouse, and when it rained, settling underneath, among the plants, listening to the rain hit the plastic while staying dry. It is the exact counterweight to everything that followed, where you start over by pressing a key.
